This intensive, practical 6-day course is followed by a formal accreditation assessment and is designed for individuals seeking internationally recognized mediator training and professional accreditation.

Mediation is a key component of Kenya’s evolving justice system. Under Article 159(2)(c) of the Constitution, the use of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) including mediation is promoted as a legitimate path to justice.

This is a highly interactive, in-person training programme delivered over six (6) full days. The course uses role-plays, case studies, group exercises, and guided discussions to reinforce key concepts.

  • Introduction to Mediation and ADR
  • Core Mediation Skills: Listening, Reframing, Summarizing
  • Setting Up the Mediation and Opening Statements
  • Managing Emotions and Building Rapport
  • Identifying Interests and Exploring Options
  • Facilitating Negotiation and Agreement
  • Ending the Mediation and Drafting Agreements
  • Setting Up a Mediation Practice

Accreditation Assessment

📅 Date: Wednesday, 3rd December 2025
📍 Format: In-person | Practical Role-Play

Assessment Components:

  1. Two Mock Mediations (as mediator)
  2. Role-Playing as a Client (peer mediation)
  3. Evaluation Criteria:
    • People Skills (rapport and trust – mandatory pass in both mediations)
    • Process Skills (effective application of mediation tools)
    • Management Skills (guiding parties through each stage)

🔔 Note: You must pass all components to be accredited. Retakes are permitted for those who do not meet the required threshold.

📄 Results will be released within 8–12 weeks after assessment.

Entry Requirements

No prior mediation experience is required. However, candidates should:

  • Be proficient in English (spoken and written)
  • Have a strong interest in mediation or dispute resolution
  • (Optional) Have completed the CIArb Introduction to Mediation course
  • Be available for the full duration of the course and assessment

Post-Course Pathways

Upon successful completion:

  • You qualify for CIArb MCIArb status and can apply to be a CIArb Accredited Mediator
  • You may proceed to Module 2 – Mediation in the CIArb Mediation Pathways
  • You will be better positioned to serve in Kenya’s Court-Annexed Mediation System, corporate or community mediation, and other ADR forums
