Theme: The Coming of Age for Mediation: Encounter from Africa
The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators is a leading Professional Membership Organization representing the interests of Alternative Dispute Resolution practitioners worldwide.
The CIArb Kenya Branch, established in 1984, is one among many other global branches of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, which was founded in 1915 with its headquarters in London. The institute promotes and facilitates the determination of disputes by Arbitration, Mediation Adjudication, and other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution. CIArb Kenya has members consisting of Mediators, Arbitrators, and Adjudicators drawn from a vast array of Professionals consisting of Bankers, Lawyers, Quantity Surveyors, Architects, Insurance Professionals, Academicians, Engineers, and Accountants, among others.
Currently, the Branch plays a major role in providing training in the previously mentioned 3 key areas of Alternative Dispute Resolution and more so building capacity within various sectors of the market to promote the use of ADR in the country and the region. Most recently we have been running 40 Hr Mediation training in the Counties and so far concluded training in Kisumu, Eldoret, Mombasa, and Nairobi Counties. We have also trained the East Africa Law Society, GIZ, COMESA Court of Justice, East Africa Court of Justice, and Institute of Engineers of Kenya, among others.
In addition to that, CIArb Kenya Branch is also an appointing Authority, prequalified by parties to be the express appointing authority in Arbitration, Mediation, and Adjudication cases.
In line with our mandate, we have organized the first International Mediation Conference scheduled for 28th October 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya; themed: “The Coming of Age for Mediation: Encounter from Africa”. The conference seeks to bring together the Mediation Fraternity in the country as well as the region to discuss pertinent issues that influence the growth of Mediation as well as explore best practices from other jurisdictions.
The conference also aims to shed more light on Mediation in the country, create more awareness, and promote Social Transformation and Access to Justice through Mediation.
