Advance Your Arbitration Expertise: Enroll in the CIArb Module 1 Course – Domestic Arbitration (Sept – Nov 2025)

The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), Kenya Branch, is pleased to invite eligible professionals to enroll in Module 1 – Domestic Arbitration, a comprehensive course designed to enhance your knowledge and practical skills in arbitration law and procedure. This is an essential step on your journey towards professional accreditation in arbitration, offering a pathway from Associate to Member (MCIArb), and ultimately Fellow (FCIArb).

Course Duration and Structure

This Module will span three months and feature two intensive tutorial sessions held online:

  • Tutorial 1: Wednesday, 17th September 2025
  • Tutorial 2: Tuesday, 21st October 2025

The learning experience is based on a detailed Workbook covering key legal and procedural aspects of domestic arbitration. Participants are expected to collect the Workbook upon completing the course application process.

  • Associate Members seeking to upgrade to Member status (MCIArb)
  • Legal practitioners, engineers, architects, and professionals involved in dispute resolution
  • Individuals wishing to understand arbitration—whether as a party, representative, or witness
  • Anyone looking to gain a structured understanding of arbitration law and practice, even without sitting the final exam

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Define and explain domestic arbitration and its distinguishing features
  • Apply relevant legal and procedural principles, including those related to the Arbitration Agreement, Tribunal jurisdiction, court intervention, and enforceable awards
  • Understand the duties of arbitrators and parties, procedural frameworks, and remedies available
  • Demonstrate practical competence in managing an arbitration, communicating with parties, and applying the CIArb Arbitration Rules

  • History and Evolution of Arbitration
  • Legal Framework: The Arbitration Acts (1995 & 1996)
  • Tribunal Appointment, Powers, and Jurisdiction
  • Conducting Proceedings: From Initiation to Hearing
  • Awards, Costs, and the Role of Courts in Arbitration

Assessment and Certification

Participants will be assessed through either:

  • A written coursework assignment, or
  • A 3-hour written examination (closed-book)

To pass, participants must attain:

  • 65% for coursework, or
  • 55% for the examination

The examination will be held on Thursday, 20th November 2025, based on the 1996 English Arbitration Act.

Successful candidates will receive:

  • An Advanced Certificate in Domestic Arbitration
  • Eligibility to apply for MCIArb Membership
  • The opportunity to progress to Modules 2 and 3 of the Fellowship pathway

Fees and Payment Options

Tutorial Fees

  • Members (up-to-date subscriptions): Kshs 47,000/=
  • Non-members: Kshs 52,000/=
    (Includes a hard copy of course materials. Postage/delivery costs are borne by participants.)

Installment payment available:

  • Initial installment: Kshs 25,000/- due by Friday, 22nd August 2025
  • Balance due by Friday, 26th September 2025

Examination Fee

  • £178 (GBP)
  • Payable in full or by installments (due in full by Friday, 3rd October 2025)

Membership Requirement

As this is a membership-level course, all applicants must have regularized their CIArb membership before registering. The membership application form was provided with the results of your Introductory Course.
